Sara at the Market

Of Busy Saturdays….

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Had allot to do last Saturday. Tons. Started by going to the Wet market in SS2 really early in order to cook curry chicken for a party Sara and I were attending later that day. Now, I usually do my grocery shopping at Supermarkets, but decided to try the wet market as Sara said it was cheaper. We parked our car at SS2, and then started to walk around, the first thing that caught our eyes were some huge prawns, that were selling at 32 per Kt. We were really interested till somebody in the stall right next to us called us about his prawns. They were cheaper, about 22 per kt. As Sara and I were discussing which to buy, he went on a speech on how his prawns where from Kuala Selangor and they were the best, unlike the stall next to him, which is from some unknown place. He went on and on, till Sara and I were convinced, so Sara asked for 1 Kt. Now, I thought it was suppose to be 1 Kilogram, and when I saw he was only putting 600grams into the plastic bag, I alerted Sara. And she told me that the price is by Kt (Kati), which is an old way of measuring. Learned something new.

We continued to buy other things like Vegetables, Potatoes, Curry powder and of course Chicken. It was quite an experience for me. Have not shopped in a Wet market for ages. We then had breakfast there and proceeded to head home to cook curry.

After about and hour of chopping, frying and other cooking related verbs, we headed out to the dentist. I had  my teeth polished and cleaned as well as having a filling filled. The dentist says i need to get my wisdom tooth extracted. Argh. Have to arange for that soon.

Then it was to Pavilion, where I had a gym session. One hour of working out really made me extremely tired and not very flexible at all. Sigh. Then we had lunch at KFC, and did some shopping there. Then we picked up Sara’s cousin Grace and headed off to Young Adult service in GT.

After service it was party time. We drove back to get the Chicken curry and then onwards to the party, where we ate tons of amazingly good food. Yum. Then we sent back Sara’s cousin and headed to 1 Utama for our midnight movie, the Dark Night.

We were soo tired, and Sara actually fell asleep for about 1 hour. I tried to wake her up, but she insisted that she was too tired and needed some shut eye. Hehe. All in all 1 learned a few important things.

1) I am too old for mid-night movie

2) A kt is 600 grams

3) Wet markets are cheaper than Supermarkets

4) Don’t mess with Kuala Selangor Prawns

Of my weekend

Monday, June 12th, 2006

The weekend went by extremly fast, and before I knew it, it was already over. On Saturday, I got up at 11:00 after staying up to watch 2 world cup games, and totally forgot that we were suppose to meet with Big Bill, who was bring us to the Central Market. He called, and I got dressed as soon as possible, and by 12:00 we met him at the Bank, and we were away.

Central Market (Formally known as black market) is this place not far from the center of town. “Naran Tuul Zakh”, in Mongolian, is something like Chatucak Market in Bangkok, Thailand, but smaller. It cost you MNT50 to get in, and there you will find a host of things from Clothing to electronics for sale. Its not exactly the safest place to go for forigneers, so we left everything back home. Our wallets, handphones, cameras, house keys. We just brought some money in our pockets. I bought a 3 peice suit for RM 104, and Irwan bought a new pair of leather shoes.

After the Market, it was a quick lunch, then went back to sleep. We were suppose to watch the ballet at 5:00pm, only to find out that Saturdays show was postponned till Sunday. Stayed home and rested, and then watched the world cup game. That was my Saturday.

Sunday started with work. Yes, I went to work, and worked most of the day, stopping at 5:00pm to watch my ballet show. We had great seats, 2nd row from the stage, and I was most entertained by the Morden ballet dances we saw. There were very expressive, and the skills were definately world class. The shanghai boys were dissapointed, cos I think they didn’t understand modern art and were hopping for something more traditional, but the Indonesias enjoyed it. After ballet, back to work, and worked till 8pm.

Then it was a quick dinner at the Korean restaurant opposite my apartment, and back home to watch Holland play. That was my weekend. Man, time flies.

Oh, in other news :-
1) Daren and Tiff have started a blog, visit them at http://darentiff.blogspot.com/.
Check out thier updates on Nate and how he is improving! :)

2) I manage to import my old blog entries from June 2005 all the way to September 2003, with a few months missing. I lost those files, but at least I have some data on my trips to Vietam :)

The Market Experince

22/4/2006 Day 5 in Bangkok : Chatuchak Weekend Market

Them gals may be British, but all Indians have bad timming, I think to myself as the girls arrive 8:15am, 45 minutes late. We have our breakfast, and decide to take a cab to the market, its the fastest and cheapest way. A tuk-tuk would have cost us 150 Bath, and a cab cost us only 82 bath.

We reach and the gals go crazy shopping. They did give a warning last night, that today would be a crazy day. I decided I needed some company after a few days of travelling alone, and the gals are fun!

We walk and talk, and I never wondered far from them, as they took thier time choosing the colours and designs of the things they wanted. Its cheaper to buy wholesale (in bulk), and thus they sometimes bought maybe 12 earings or 10 bracellets. “Your well trained aren’t you”, they comment, as I never complained they took too long, I just sat down waiting for them, enjoying listening to them talk. The british accent does it for me for sure! I told them that my closest friends are gals, and the shopping thing comes second nature to me already.

I ask the gals if they could bring a gift for me back to England, and they said it was not an issue at all. I give them Yihueys address and the 2 t-shirts I purchased for her. Hope you like it Yihuey! Its was her idea after all to come to Bangkok, and she practically planned my trip for me. I saw the Durian Chips that Angela wanted, but by the time she replied my sms, I could not find the shop anymore. Sorry Angela!!

We kept walking, stopping for a drink and lunch, talking about our different royal families. Did you know that allot of Brits think the Queen had Diana and Dodi killed, because they didn’t want the chance of Prince William and Harry having a step father that could be muslim. What interesting theories and stories swapped. We continued walking and shopping, till the market closed and then back to Khoa San Road.

We had dinner at an Indian place, played Jengga and shared more stories. We said our goodbyes, we hugged and that was the last I saw of them. I miss them already :P The gals were great man! Another great day.
