Tango in Paris :- Basilique du Sacré-Cœur

Friday, September 26th, 2008

The Sacré-Cœur Basilica (French: Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, “Basilica of the Sacred Heart”) is a Roman Catholic basilica and popular landmark in Paris, France, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Sacré-Cœur is pronounced /sak?e kœ?/. The basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre (Montmartre butte), the highest point in the city.

On the second day, we were rather tired already, seing much and doing a lot, and so we decided to take it a little slower. We went this time to the places away from the center of the city and headed to Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, which is a brilliant cathedral on a hill in Paris. From there you can see most of the city, and witness a whole range of artist and street performers. There are allot of little shops selling mini Eifel towers and such, and quite a few con artist as well. Do be wary of strangers. The view is excellent and the church is beautiful. Over here, don’t take photos. Staff from the church will scold you and tell you off, like they did to somebody else. Not me :) A must see. Lie on the grass on a sunny afternoon and let the world go by.

While walking around the Notre-Dame area, we walked passed the Police Station and just behind it, there was this display going on by the Police, where they let the public see the old cars and motorbikes used by them and the fire bridage through the years. Quite nice actually. I love looking at old cars. Not sure how long there will be there, but try and see.

Tango in Paris :- Tour Maine-Montparnasse

Paris 360

Tour Maine-Montparnasse (Maine-Montparnasse Tower), also commonly named Tour Montparnasse, is a 210-meter (689 ft) tall office skyscraper located in Paris, France, in the area of Montparnasse. Constructed from 1969 to 1972, it is the tallest skyscraper in France and the ninth tallest building in the European Union.[citation needed] In the future, it may be surpassed in height by the Tour AXA (225 m), and later by Tour Phare, Tour Signal and Tour Generali (approximately 300 meters).

Our co-worker Stan gave us some tips before we left, and lent us his guide book. The most useful tip was, don’t bother going up the Eifel Tower if you only have 2 days, and don’t want to spend the whole trip in a queue. Go instead to this place, and see Paris360. Its basicly, a viewing galery on top of the tallest building in France, and you can see the whole city. From way up there, the view is spectacular, and you can see how straight the roads are, how beautiful the city is. Only 9 Euro. No 4 in Nicks’s must do list.

Tango in Paris :- Eifel Tower

Eifel Tower

The Eiffel Tower (French: Tour Eiffel, /tu? ?f?l/) is an iron tower built on the Champ de Mars beside the Seine River in Paris. The tower has become a global icon of France and is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower is the tallest building in Paris. More than 200,000,000 have visited the tower since its construction in 1889, including 6,719,200 in 2006, making it the most visited paid monument in the world.[4][5] Including the 24 m (79 ft) antenna, the structure is 325 m (1,063 ft) high (since 2000), which is equivalent to about 81 levels in a conventional building.

And coming at No.3 on my list of places to visit in France is of course, the Eifel Tower. Who could say they have been to Paris and not have seen this magnificent building. Just along the river, you can spot it from almost anywhere. Its one tall building, and its quite impressive to see. The queues to go on top are dreadfully long, and so Ryan and I didn’t bother. We did however take many photos around the area and just enjoyed the view.

Tango in Paris :- Notre Dame de Paris

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Notre Dame de Paris is a Gothic cathedral on the eastern half of the Île de la Cité in Paris, France, with its main entrance to the west. It is the cathedral of Paris and the seat of the Archbishop of that city. Notre Dame de Paris is widely considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. It was restored and saved from destruction by Viollet-le-Duc, one of France’s most famous architects. The name Notre Dame means “Our Lady” in French. Notre Dame de Paris was one of the first Gothic cathedrals, and its construction spanned the Gothic period. Its sculptures and stained glass show the heavy influence of naturalism, giving them a more secular look that was lacking from earlier Romanesque architecture.

If you know of Quasimodo, even if only the cartoon version and even if you don’t know the famous story of the Hunchback, you need to visit this beautiful cathedral. Its on the small island in the middle of the river, and its famous for its beautiful statues and stained glass windows. Again, though there was a sign to say no photography, everybody had the camera out, and I followed suit. Enterance is free but you could pay a few euros to go and visit the treasures part, which also leads to access to the top of the cathedral. Must see no 2 in Paris.
