Down-Under Dayz : Manly, NSW

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

God has really blessed us this trip, especially through our friends, both in Sydney and in Melbourne. My friends Joseph and Esther who live in Sydney, took us out the whole day Saturday and brought us to so many places! We had lunch at a Tim Sum place in a mall, then it was onwards to a small town north of Sydney called Manly.

This was a beautiful place, and more family friendly then compared to Bondi. Sure it had surfers, but there were allot more restaurants, allot more families enjoying the view, allot quieter as well. Its more like a small beach town, a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

We sat on the beach, enjoyed ice cream, and just before the sun set, we decided to go to another spot where we could really enjoy the view. All photo’s of Manly here :- http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicktay/sets/72157604903737721/

Down-Under Dayz : The Rocks, Sydney, NSW

Monday, May 12th, 2008

You have not been to Sydney, until you have been to the Rocks, and seen the Opera House. Thought I must say its reputation doesn’t really live up to the view of it, as In, I have seen so many adverts on Australia that I was hoping I would be awed by the Opera House, but when I first saw it, I went, thats it! Don’t get me wrong, its still a pretty building, and for its age, it is an Icon. Perhaps I enjoyed the Great Ocean Road much better.

We took out our camera and went photo crazy. Taking as many shots as we could think of, capturing the moment. The rocks is a nice place! Especially on the weekends where there are live Jazz bands, street performances, and even a small market that sells stuff. We however enjoyed the photos the most.

How did we get to the Rocks? Take a train from the park to Circular Quay Station. Its just a few hops from Museum station, which is right bellow Hyde Park where we stayed. The trains in Sydney are very efficient and clean.

Down-Under Dayz : Bondi Beach, NSW, Australia

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Early on the 3rd day of our Trip to Sydney, Sara and I decided to go to the famed Bondi Beach. We took the 380 bus at Hyde Park, and within and hour or so, we had arrived. “Bondi” or “Boondi” is an Aboriginal word meaning water breaking over rocks or noise of water breaking over rocks, and just a few minutes there, you can understand why they named it such. Its a beautiful beach popular with surfers and holiday makers alike. Its is more for the young and playful rather than families with kids, as the waters are more suited for surfing and stuff, but worth a visit for sure.

We just sat there and lazed on the beach, watching the sky go by. There was plenty to see, as you might have noticed from the photo’s above. People playing football and futsie, surfers, tourist snapping shots. All sorts of stuff. We got hungry at around 12pm and where else would you eat in Bondi? Nicks!

The food was not to pricey for a beach and popular tourist place. I do recommend this to others, if only for my namesake. Overall, we loved Bondi! Perhaps because it was not in the summer that the beach was not over crowded. I hear you can’t really get a good patch of sand to call your own in the summer months. Down-Under Dayz : Sydney Fish Market

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

Not exactly a well known place among the tourist, the Sydney Fish Market, was one of the highlights of our trip there. Sydney Fish Market incorporates a working fishing port, wholesale fish market, fresh seafood retail market, a delicatessen, a sushi bar, a bakery, a gift shop, a fruit and vegetable market, a beverage outlet, a seafood cooking school, indoor seating and an outdoor promenade for visitors. There are daily wholesale auctions for Sydney’s seafood retailers.

At first we had wanted to walk there from our hotel near Hyde Park. We got as far as Darling Harbour, and gave up, and took a tram instead. The trams were super expensive, so a word of advice, always buy return. We had boarded the tram, bought one way tickets which cost us AUD 4.20 each, only to realize the return was AUD 6.40. Argh.

If you love seafood, you gotta make your way here. Come early if you want to see the local restaurant owners bargin for the fresh stuff. Come before 4pm, else there will be nothing else to see! You can even choose what fish you want and ask the many restaurants there to cook it for you, or eat the already cooked seafood there have to offer. Sara and I ate a Grilled fish and a dozen Oysters :) Yum.

While eating our fish, we saw the table next to us eating prawns and we made conversation. We asked them where they got it from, how much it cost, how does it taste. They couldn’t finish theirs and donated about 5 prawns to us! God has really blessed us this trip :)

On the way back, we saw the same Tram conductor and told her about our mistake of buying a one way tram ride. She took pity on us, and charged us a cheaper fare instead of the full one ;) God is good!
