Burn after reading :- A review

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Watched it in Edinburgh with my bro and Allan, and I loved it. Firstly its a dark comedy that kinda pokes fun at the lives of people who live in Washington, and maybe the state of mind of America at large. It has many sub stories that all kinda tie in neatly at the end. Don’t want to give away the plot, so I’ll just say it had a good ending for me. Brad Pitt plays somebody I actually like, which has not happen for a while now. George Clooney didn’t do half bad. Watch it!

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels :- A Review

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Yet another British classic, this movie is a humours story of 4 young men living dodgy lives trying to make it big via a high stake poker game which leads to a series of extremly funny events. It is just so funny! Mostly filmed near Borough Market, where I eat my Lamb burgers :) this movie is a definate must see when doing a British Film marathon. My review 9.0 / 10.0

Layer Cake :- A Review

Monday, October 6th, 2008

One of the great British gangster films, Layer cake features Daniel Craig before he became Bond. This film revolves around Mr.X, and unamed drug dealer and his life in the different layers of the British underworld. Based on a novel with the same name, this film really entertaints and shows a very different side of Daniel Craigh. Its actually funny to watch this after you watch him as Bond, as there are some scenes that show his desire to play the legendary 007, or at least thats what I think. Anyways, I was hooked from the get go. It was part of my Sunday brit film fair, and I give this film 8.5 / 10.0.

The Mummy :- Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Entertaining, but not quite there. Watched it and though I did manage to finish it on DVD without turning it off out of pure boredom, I was however alittle dissapointed at a few things. Firstly the new Evy changes the dynamics of the first two movies. The relationship between Rick and her lacked the same chemistry we loved in the first 2 movies. Secondly I didn’t like the guy who played the son Alex. If they grew up in England, he would have a british accent, just like he did when he was a kid in the Mummy returns. He just didn’t do a good enough job playing the son of Rick. And finally I was upset by how the Dragon Emperor died way too easily. The fight sequence should have involved the fallen first emperor! And there should have been more love scenes between him and Michelle Yeoh, after all she was morning him for 2000 years!!

The plus sides? Michelle Yeow rocked in the show! The effects were not bad, they didn’t reuse the Face in the Sand and Face in the Water thing. They had Yetis which was cool and of course I loved Jonathan, though I think the movie should have ended with him moving to Shangrilla and staying there. He always seems to have the worse of the happy endings!

All in all, its a DVD movie to chase a way the boredom. I give it a 6.4 / 10.0

Wanted :- A Review

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Last night Sara and I watched this at One Utama. Not really our first choice, but since Hancock was sold out, decided to give it a go. Well, what can I say. The movie to me was actually rather “B” grade. It didn’t really feature anything that was groundbreaking in the way of plots or visual effects. It had the same “slow motion” sequence over and over again, and had totally fictional action sequences that would put the movie in the “fantasy / Sci-Fi” genre rather that “Action”. The beginning was draggy,  and Sara actually though we were in the wrong cinema. I predicted the plot rather quickly, which disappointed me. I don’t claim to be a great writer but I get very disappointed with a movie when I can predict the twist and turns. I love movies which surprise me with either great dialog or witty plot, which lacked on both accounts here. Did it entertain? It did for a while, but it got old fast. Just because you stick two big names like Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie, doesn’t make a movie good. Angelina was amazingly sexy though :)

Nick’s Rating :- 4.3 / 10.0
Sara’s Rating :- 5.0 / 10.0
