While I was in Seoul this January, I manage to catch the 2008 Seoul International Ice Festival, which was located just in front of the City Hall building. It featured many ice sculptures in the most interesting of shapes and sizes. One which really captured my attention was the Ice house complete with the above toilet bowl, sink, computer and bed. Of course they were not fully functioning Kids flocked to the fair, mostly to take pictures on the Ice dinosaurs and such. Quite fun I must say.

After chasing after the parade, we were tired. Dead tired. We felt we didn’t have the energy or time to explore the Palace, opposite the Seoul City Hall, so we decided to just sit down at a restaurant and eat our last korean meal before we headed back to the Airport, to return home. The closest place we could find was this one, called Cobaco. The place was quite full, and that it always a good sign. We ordered a few dishes, with what little Won we had left, the food was not cheap, but not really expensive really. The final bill cost us 15,000 Won.

It may sound like an easy job, but with the bags that we were carrying, it was actually very tiring, as these guys really walked fast down the streets of Seoul. They walked from the Tourism building all the way to the Palace opposite City Hall.

We saw on a Map that there was a Cultural Zone, somewhere in Gwancheol-dong, and so we walked and walked in search for this place. We asked so many people, yet nobody seemed to know what we were talking about. Close to giving up, standing opposite the Kyoo Building, near the Jonggak Station, we heard a drum being beaten, and we turned around and we saw an even going on the opposite side of the street, near the Korean National Tourism Association office.

They did some kind of ceremony, dressed up in traditional costumes, where they beat on a huge drum, and rang the huge bell. It was very exciting to see! And then suddenly the walked away in a parade type manner, where Adrian and I gave chase, those pictures, tomorrow.

Not far from Jongno-Sam-Ga Station, you can find Isadong, a part of the city which is a heaven for tourist who want to buy local antiques, gifts, and many other things Korean. There are many shops and Tea places where you can sit and watch the crowd walk by. I bought a few little trinkets but soon realize that things in Korea were not cheap, at least not for a Malaysian

I would have loved to spend more time here, but as our schedule would have it, we had to check out from our Hotel by 12pm, and didn’t want to be too late. Do plan to spend at least 3-4 hours if you truly want to explore Insadong.

The next morning, after about 5 hours of sleep, Adrian and I took to the streets of Seoul, looking for some sites to see. There was a palace near our hotel, and we decided to visit that first. The place was called Unhyunggung, which was the personal residence of Ha Eung Lee, also known as Heungsundaewongun, who was the father of Gojong, at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. Tickets cost us 700 Won, and we treated to view the many traditional outfits and clothes in this palace.
