I went to Pudu today to purchase a bus ticket for my friend who is going back to her home town. It was a short journey, no more than a 10 minute car ride even in the horrendous Kuala Lumpur traffic, and as I just wanted to pop-in, perform the deed and return to my office, I took a cab. Getting a cab there was no issue at all, I just stuck out my hand, and within seconds a friendly neighborhood cab driver stopped. The ride cost me Rm 3.50, and I reached in less than 8 minutes. On the way back however things were very different. I tried to catch a cab from the opposite direction, and though there a 20 odd cabs there, none were of the honest kind. Most wanted Rm10 flat rate, refusing to use the meter. I never understood that. I mean, what’s the point of having meters in your cab? I think they want to prey on the new arrivals at KL. Fresh off the bus from their hometown’s with bags stuffed with clothes and heads filled with big city dreams. Those dreams won’t last long, the local taxi driver will make sure of that! I walked about 200 meters away from the Bus station and waited at the taxi stand near the Maternity hospital. It was but 3 minutes waiting time, and my hero arrived. An honest cabbie who would use his meter. RM 3.10 later, and I was back in the cool air-con breeze of my office.
