London Calling :- Borough Market

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Borough Market is a wholesale and retail food market in Southwark, South East London, England. It is one of the largest food markets in the world, and is regarded by many to be one of the highest quality markets in the United Kingdom,[citation needed] selling a large variety of foods from all around the world.

The wholesale market operates on all weekday mornings (2 a.m. to 8 a.m.), but the retail market only operates on Thursdays (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.), Fridays (12 p.m. - 6 p.m.) and Saturdays (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.). The market, which is focused historically on fruits and vegetables, has in recent years added stalls dealing with the fine food retail market.

Some of England’s finest farmers use Borough Market to help sell their produce and maintain standards in the countryside.[citation needed] Since the beginning of 2000, some of the market’s most famous traders include: Furness Fish & Game Supplies, Peter Gott and Sillfield Farm, Andrew Sharp and Herdwick Lamb, and the Spanish company Brindisa.

The present market, located on Borough High Street just south of Southwark Cathedral on the southern end of London Bridge, is a successor to one that originally adjoined the end of London Bridge (and made a considerable nuisance of itself in the process). It was first mentioned in 1276, although the market itself claims to have existed since Roman times and was subsequently moved south of St Margaret’s church on the High Street. The City of London received a royal charter from Edward VI in 1550 to control all markets in Southwark, which was confirmed by Charles II in 1671. However, the market caused such traffic congestion that in 1754 it was abolished by an Act of Parliament.

The Act allowed for the local parishioners to set up another market on a new site, and in 1756 it began again on a 4.5 acre (18,000 m²) site in Rochester Yard. During the 19th century it became one of London’s most important food markets due to its strategic position near the riverside wharves of the Pool of London.

The present buildings were designed in 1851, with additions in the 1860s and an entrance designed in the Art Deco style added on Borough High Street in 1932. A refurbishment began in 2001. Work to date includes the re-erection in 2004 of the South Portico from the Floral Hall, previously at Covent Garden which was dismantled when the Royal Opera House was reconstructed in the 1990s.

People come to trade at the market from all different parts of the U.K. and a great deal of traditional European products are shipped over and sold by people of different cultures who live in London.Borough Market, The market is administered by 16 trustees who have to live in the area.

Borough Market has become a fashionable place to buy food. It has been promoted by British television chefs and has been used as a film set; notable films with scenes filmed in the streets around the market include Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004).

Just a stones throw from London Bridge is this nice little market buzzing with people during lunch hour. Wikipedia says its one of the biggest in the world, but I laugh at that claim. Have they ever been to Catucak in Thailand? Haha. Anyways, its a nice place to explore loads of different types of food. There are fresh seafood, meats, eggs, vegetables, beer, wines, cheese all sorts of food, both cooked and raw. Come on over and grab some grub.

London Calling : Full English Breakfast

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Not wanting to eat McDonalds on the first day we were in London, Ryan and myself decided we had to try something traditional. After exploring a little of the town of Cryodon, where we live found ourselves at the Centrale Shopping Centre. As most of the shops were closed we found a small joint just around the corner and ate some grub. I noticed immediately the black stuff on my plate which looked like something overcooked but tasted ok. That was the black pudding which is actually blood and other spare parts of sausages. Here is what wikipedia says about the Full English Breakfast.

The normal ingredients of a traditional full English breakfast are: bacon, eggs, fried or grilled tomatoes, fried mushrooms, fried bread or toast, and sausages, usually served with a cup of tea. Black pudding is added in some regions as well as fried leftover mashed potatoes (called Potato cakes). Originally a way to use up leftover vegetables from the main of the day before, bubble and squeak, shallow-fried leftover vegetables with potato, has become a breakfast feature in its own right. Baked beans and hash browns are modern additions that have crept into many recipes.

A popular variant is the breakfast roll, which is a French bread demi-baguette filled with the contents of a full breakfast. The concept developed as a ready-to-go meal from convenience stores. It was spurred on by the innovation of in-store ovens being used to cook part-baked frozen French bread.

When an English breakfast is ordered to contain everything available, it is often referred to as a “Full Monty”, and often attributed to Field Marshal Montgomery, the prominent British military officer of World War II. However the OED states that “Perhaps the most plausible (explanation) is that it is from a colloquial shortening of the name of Montague Maurice Burton (1885-1952), men’s tailor, and referred originally to the purchase of a complete three-piece suit”.

Last saturday before I left for the UK, Sara and I had a full day. We had many errands to runs and not forgeting to mention our pre-marital counselling class (will blog more about this later). Where did we have lunch? At this gem of a place called PappaRich. Its a modern coffee shop type place with nice decor.

We ordered Pappa Toast Kaya Butter Bun (RM3.80), which was very good. A soft with crispy skin bun, using a good chunk of quality butter and home made kaya. The french fries(RM3.90) where also home made, and fried to perfection. I drank an interesting concoction called Soya Milk Cincau Gula Melaka (RM4.80) which had home made soya bean milk and tasted yummy. Not too sweet and rather refreshing. Sara had a can of coke (RM3.20). There was a 5% service charge and the bill came up to RM16.50. So cheap. Cheaper than drinking and eating at Starbucks!! My only issue was the staff didn’t chase away smokers who smoked inside the air condition area while there was plenty of seats outside.

JJCM :- The Olive, Plaza Hartamas (Part 2)

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

After trying thier amazing Tiramisu in Part 1, Sara and I decided we MUST try the Aglio E Olio as it came highly recomended by our cell member. The owner told us it was a little too small a portion for the both of us, and thus we ordered another Roasted Salmon. I took an Ice tea while Sara had a glass of red wine. It was not long before she realized that two other ladies drinking Red wine as well, seem to have a little more in thier glass then her, but I said, perhaps they ordered a double? The dishes came quite promptly and we dug in. The skin of the salmon was very crisp and well done, the fish very fresh, quite good actually. The pasta was firm, the authentic Italian way, unlike a few places here that tend to overcook the pasta instead of serving it “Aldente or Cooked enough to be firm but not soft”. It tasted a little bland though, and not the best I ever had. We then proceeded to desert, and of course it was Tiramisu :)

The Pasta        RM23

Conclution : I know we gave this place a good rating based on the tiramisu only, but for dinner somehow I felt alittle dissapointed.
