London Calling :- Les Misérables

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Les Misérables (enPR: l? m?z??r-äb?; in French, IPA: [le mize'?a?bl]), colloquially known as Les Mis or Les Miz, is a musical composed in 1980 by the French composer Claude-Michel Schönberg with a libretto by Alain Boublil. Sung through, it is perhaps the most famous of all French musicals and one of the most performed musicals worldwide. On October 8, 2006, the show celebrated its 21st anniversary and became the longest-running West End musical in history and is still running (though it has changed venues).

Les Miserables

You can’t come to London and not watch a musical before returning! I waited for Sara to come and we decided to watch Les Misérables, the musical based on the book of the same title by Victor Hugo. With much excitement the two of us appeared at the Queen’s Theather, not far from Chinatown on a cold Tuesday night. Sara managed to buy for us Stall tickets for £36 on the day itself in Leichester Square and so the 4 of us , Sara, Myself, Ryan and Christine went to Queen’s Theater to watch. What a show man! No wonder its been running for 23 years. I strongly recomend anybody who comes to London to catch this amazing production!! It was technical brilliance. Most of the songs were not the type that would linger in your memories but the performance will! The propts, the voices in harmony. Wow

London Calling :- Westfield

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

There is a new mall in London, and its HUGE! On Sunday, after church and lunch, Sara and I decided we had to go and just see, even if we were not planning to do any more shopping. We took the Central line to Shepards Bush and as soon as we exited the station and turned right, there it was, the mamoth of a building.  We followed the crowd and soon found ourselves inside this big beautiful building with sky lights and chandeliars to boot. The design is very curvy, with very few sharp corners and there were many shops. There was one special segment called the Village which hosted all the super exclusive brand names such as Daniel Hersheson, De Beers, Dior, Hackett, Jo Malone, Kurt Geiger, Montblanc, Mulberry, Myla, Versace, Louis Vuitton and many many others. Its a good mix of high end of medium range retail shops and its a beautiful building, but with very few places for people to sit. Not that many food places though, so I suggest eating before going there. Worth a visit, just to say you have been there.

Barcelona

Sara and I are off on a holiday! Where to? Originally we wanted to go to Germany, but when we sat down and calculated the costs it was a little to expensive for us right now. The alternative? Barcelona, Spain. We will be there for 5 days, then back to Malaysia. Won’t have internet access while I am away, so I wont be able to drop Entrecards or approve comments, for that I do apologize. Please do stay tuned for updates.

On our first Sunday in London, Sara and I went to Hillsongs church and then onwards to have lunch with Corny at the famous Duck restaurant called “The Four Seasons”. Even Sara agrees its the best duck she has had in a long time :) We chatted and ate and then headed to eat dessert just around the corner where we had amazing Egg Tarts and Tou Fu Far, though the waitress was rather mean and scolded Sara for her indecision. The Lady Boss was nicer :)

London Calling :- Fortnum & Mason

Fortnum & Mason, often shortened to just “Fortnum’s”, is possibly one of the most famous stores in the world, has held many Royal Warrants for over 150 years and is the shop most closely associated with the British Royal Family. It is an upmarket department store situated in Piccadilly, London, established in 1707 by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason.

Its fame rests almost entirely on its magnificent food hall, (though only two of its several floors are devoted to food), stocking an extraordinary variety of exotic, speciality and also ‘basic’ provisions. It is also the location of a celebrated tea shop and has Britain’s only hair salon dedicated to long hair.

In 1761, William Fortnum’s grandson Charles went into the service of Queen Charlotte and the Royal Court affiliation led to an increase in business. The store began to stock speciality items, namely ready-to-eat luxury meals such as fresh poultry or game served in aspic jelly.

During the Napoleonic Wars, the emporium supplied dried fruit, spices and other preserves to the British officers and during the Victorian era it was frequently called upon to provide food for prestigious Court functions. Queen Victoria even sent shipments of Fortnum and Mason’s concentrated beef tea to Florence Nightingale’s hospitals during the Crimean War.

In 1851 Fortnum & Mason first created the Scotch egg and in 1886, after having bought the entire stock of five cases of a new product made by a Mr Heinz, became the first store in the world to stock baked beans.

I went there on my first day in London visiting Nicky, and decided to drink this famous tea. I felt like the Queen! Great Tea, ok only cakes. I have eaten much better cakes.

My rating :- 7/10
