Its every Dad’s duty here in Malaysia to go and register his offspring’s birth. Being a first time dad, I was gleaming with excitement when it was my turn. I went home to get the relevant supporting documents, basically the Wedding Certificate, and then headed out to the Department of Registration here in KL. I took a cab, as I didn’t want to bother with looking for parking and things like that. All the way there I chatted with my taxi driver, and shared with him the purpose of my trip. He, a dad of 3 sons, shared how the process would be like, then I realized I didn’t have one of the required documents! They require the Appointment card of the mother if its her first child, to prove that she is actually the mother. I thought I could get away without it, but they turned me away. I took a cab back to the hospital, found the appointment card and took another cab to the department.

On the way there, again I chatted with the Taxi driver, this one was still a bachelor an was interested in the whole registration process. When I got there, I photocopied the relevant documents :- my ic, sara’s ic, our wedding cert, the hospital birth notification and the appointment card, and then headed up to the office. While waiting for an elevator, I saw this man having the same documents, and we started talking. He was here for his 2nd son’s birth cert. He was a foreigner married to a local malaysian chinese. His mom was from Lebenon, and his dad from Portugal. We chatted and chatted, and he said he could see the excitement in my eyes as I talked about my son, and he remembered how it was when his firstborn was born.

I quickly got a number, and within 2 minutes I passed all the relevant documents to the nice lady, who told me I must be a 1st time dad, cos she saw my excitement. Then I was asked to wait for a few more minutes and it was ready! The myKid card would take about a month to be ready, but that’s ok. What joy!!

On this day in History..

Just realized Nathan’s birth date: 01.02.2010 is very special. 01.02 is a mirror image of 2010. COOL :)
