Down-Under Dayz : Road Trip Day 5

May 6th, 2008 by Nick Tay

Mt Gambier, South Australia - The Grampians - Melbourne, Victoria

With the Wine region behind us, and the last day of our road trip at hand, we woke up early to explore Mt Gambier, which was famous for its Blue Lake and the SinkHole we visited last night. Both these places did not disappoint. The Sink Hole didn’t have any possums in the day, but it still proved to be a beauty, and the blue lake was really really blue!

We then left South Australia, and headed back to Victoria, the journey was really scenic, as we passed through many hills and mountains. We stopped at the border just to take a few shots of South Australia before we crossed over once again.

Our next destination was  Grampians National Park which lies 235 kilometres west of Melbourne. The Grampians feature a striking series of sandstone mountain ranges. These hills were no simple drive. They twisted and turned around and I could go no faster than 35 km/h even if I wanted too! I was too scared to look down the slopes and kept my eyes on the road ahead though the two ladies often commented on how bad the fall would have been if I did ever go over the cliff.

We finally reached our final detination before we would head back to Melbourne, and that was MacKenzie Falls - One of Victoria’s largest waterfalls. It was quite a walk to reach the falls, and I was super duper tired after we climbed back up the hill, and almost died. But we made it and were glad we did as the falls, though not huge, were very beautiful and worth the visit.

I drove us back down the mountain, and once we got down, and reach the straight roads, it was Sara’s turn to drive. We stopped for Gas and to fill up our bellies and then it was Melbourne bound.

The sun had started to set, and we were tired. We reach Melbourne at about 7pm, ate at this place called Vodka, Bosh and Tears, a Polish restaurant and then we slept like babies. End of the road trip. I have seen almost 60% of Victoria, Australia is a HUGE country.

On this day in History..
