Down-Under Dayz : Road Trip Day 4

May 5th, 2008 by Nick Tay

Warronbol, Victoria - Mt Gambier and Coonawarra, South Australia

We left our little place early that morning, and prepared to cross the state line into South Australia. It was a long journey through the countryside and the road had many a twist and turn. The speed limit was 100km/h and I was very sure I was following it closely. The GPS stated my speed as 101 and the speedometer in the car said 102 km/h, unfortunately the Victorian police dissagreed, and I was slapped with a AUD220 infrigement notice! ARGH! They said I was going 115 km/h.

Sigh! He refused to hear my story, and even forced me to do a breath test, which of course I passed with flying colours. Anyways, I paid it already online. There goes my budget for this trip. We continued on and then less than 2 km away, we crossed into South Australia!

We reached our destination for the night, Mt Gambier, but we decided we would only explore much later. We placed our bags and zoomed to another town only 1 hour away called Coonawarra, which is famous for its wine region. Coonawarra is an Aborigional word meaning “Honeysuckle”. It is about 380km southeast of Adelaide, close to the border with Victoria.

We drove and visited as many wineries as we could, and even bought a few bottles as gifts for our hosts in Melbourne as well as other family friends who have been a real blessing to us. The two ladies tastes wine, as I was the dedicated driver, I tasted the Olive Oil and Cheese :)

That was the end of Day 4. A long yet fruitful day.

The sun had set, and we decided to visit the Sink Hole back in Mt Gambier which apparently was famous for its Possums! We headed there in the rain and was not dissapointed! We fed them bread and took as many photos as we could with them, then headed back for dinner.

On this day in History..

You mispelt the name of the first town above. I think you mean Warrnambool.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip

those speed cameras are well known to make mistakes, you shouldn’t have paid it & have your day in court. Even better since you’re not from here throw the ticket away!

Didn’t wanna get the owners of the car in trouble :)
