Down-Under Dayz : Exploring Downtown Melbourne
April 22nd, 2008 by Nick Tay
Sara had class most of the day today, and early in the morning I drove her down in her car and parked on Campus, which is in the heart of Melbourne City. We had to go down early to beat the traffic jam and also to get into the car park which closes at 9am. And so once we arrived and parked the car, Sara showed me how to use the Trams, and then as she was in class, I explored the city myself.

The trams are a great way to travel around the city, especialy the city center as there is an all day ticket caled city saver for AUD2.40 which lets you take any tram around the central busines district. There is also a city circle tram, for tourist which is totaly free. It even informs you of the attractions near by, and the walking distance to it, at each stop. Its a very tourist friendly city!

The city center is actually quite small for the size of Melbourne, but very beautiful. Budget one day to explore the city center, and then you can explore other things in Melbourne. The architecture is an amazing mix of old colonial buildings and very morden artsy designs. There are tons of parks and trees, a beautiful Yara river, benches everywhere for you to sit, a lovely city really!

I took the circle tram around the city, then made one walk around on foot, and then started to explore the different sections, criss-crossing slowly. The city is very structured, almost a complete square, with roads and trams routes deviding the sections equally. You can’t really get lost, but a map is needed just to make sure you see all you can see on the particular path you are on. There are maps and signboard everywhere telling you where to go, very useful.

My favourite place to just sit and hang out was the State Library, where you can just park yourself on the lawn and eat your lunch, as most of the crowd did as well. Tomorrow my road trip begins and I guess I wont be able to update till I am back. Stay tuned.
