The rambutan (IPA: [ramˈbu.t̪ɑn], Nephelium lappaceum) is a medium-sized tropical tree in the family Sapindaceae, probably native to southeast Asia, and the fruit of this tree. It is closely related to several other edible tropical fruits including the Lychee, Longan and Mamoncillo. It is believed to be native to the Malay Archipelago where the name quite literally means ‘hairy’. although its precise natural distribution is unknown. In Costa Rica and Nicaragua, it is known as mamón chino.

Somebody from my office brought a bag full of the fruit and it has been our the pantry table for days now. Every now and then somebody takes one or two,  and supprisingly the bag is still relatively full. I love this fruit. Probably cos there were 2 of  them behind my fathers house growing up. We would climb the tree to get its fruits, or even use a “Galah”, a long pole with a cutting mechanism at the end of it to cut off the fruits to eat.

One time, me and my friend Andrew climbed the top of the roof of the garden shed to get at the fruits, and I fell through the roof landing on my feet! It was a tragic event! We eventually covered up the crime by placing a broken branch over the whole to make it look like an accident, though I do think my dad knew it was me. Boys will be boys
