Counting down to 31…..
June 8th, 2007 by Nick Tay

Its now less than a month before I hit 31 years on this Earth. Where did all the time go? I remember when I was 11, I couldn’t wait to be a teenager. I wanted to grow up and conquer the world. I wanted to be a fighter pilot (after watching Top Gun). I went around saying ,”I feel the Need. The need for Speed”. I would cycle my bicycle as fast as I could, imagining I was zooming through the clouds in my F14 Tomcat. I also wished my fighter could transform into a robot like the Veritech VF-1 Valkyrie Fighter Rick Hunter flew. There are days when I drive my car, I still imagine I am flying over the clouds…as you can see I am still resemble boy I was back then. I look in the mirror sometimes and I wonder what happen to him? I still do look like him, minus all the fat I added on to my face, and of course minus all the scars I have gotten from crashing my bicycle, but we are very different people, he and I. We even go by different names. Back then I was Nicky, and now I am Nick. I don’t think anybody today still calls me that, even my sister calls me Nick. Nicky was so innocent, his eyes were always filled with Awe at what the world could offer him. He would see a field of dandelions and see beautiful flowers, not weeds. Always seeing the good in people, always willing to help those he could. I wonder sometimes, if I could go back in time and talk to him what would I say.
- Study Harder in your exams
- Take more pictures with your mom
- Don’t quit piano and guitar lessons
- Convince your dad to let you go the exchange program in Japan
- Go for Mandarin lessons
- Join the volleyball team
- Lean how to swim
- Save more money, you don’t need all those gadgets
- Don’t store your dairy on the computer where your nosy brother can read it.
Hehe. I could go on and on, and knowing me, Nicky would not pay any attention to anything I told him. Alumni of the School of Hard Knocks, we are. Very hard knocks. But its not all bad, in fact it has been a good ride.
Nicky never would imagine if I told him that he would go to Canada and Ice Skate. That he would go back packing in Chicago and West Virginia. That he would get to ride on horses in the plains of Ulaanbaatar or taste the most amazing food in Pakistan and Vietnam. Nicky was a kampung boy, and in many ways Nick still is.
What would you say to your younger self?
On this day in History..
