My Fair Lady, The Musical :- A Review
Posted by Nick Tay

I heard some people give this musical a bad review, and hence most of my friends didn’t want to watch it. Whoever was that who said it was bad, I wonder whats wrong with him? Or perhaps he was comparing the Movie to the Musical, or perhaps even comparing Julie Andrews’s performance in the original musical to this one. Whatever scale he used to review it, i think he was wrong, for I loved it.
I had to remind myself that this was a musical and not a stage version of the movie, so I had to expect certain variations. The director and the actors were obviously allowed to then give their own twist to the characters, just like I am sure Audrey Hepburn didn’t play the character exactly like Julie Andrews did. And so as the lights when dim, and the orchestra began to play, I sat in silent expectation.
The prompt and backdrop were simple compared to the Movie, but you can’t expect them to shoot in front of St. James right? And as soon as Eliza Doolitle started her role, I was impressed. Her cockney accent was spot on, and she did a superb job. The character of Professor Higgins was also well played, a llitle different than Rex Harrison played him, but a good job in capturing the hearts of the crowd. I was dissapointed with Col Pickering though, as he should have been more manly and more gentlemen like, just like played by Wilfrid Hyde-White. He was alittle to feminine and I didn’t think that was the true vision of the writter. I loved the transformation from cockney to proper English, and the Ascott Horse Races where a blast.
Freddy sang beautifully, and I seriously though he was in love when he gave melody to “On the Street where you live”. Alfred Doolitle was another spot on character, and “Get me to the church on time” was superb.
I was however disappointed with the Palace scene, it went on to quickly, there was no visible Prince of Transylvania, Zultan was very badly done, and I didn’t feel her elegance as she entered the Ball, which would have added onto the grandure.
All in all, it was superb, and I am so glad I went. Thanks Sara for getting me the tickets. And oh, what did I wear to compliment Sara’s dress (she looked great by the way)

Sometimes you can’t trust reviewers, who bring a lot of bias and unrealistic expectations when they watch it.
Sometimes we want entertainment, but the reviewers are posers who look for “art” and something out-of-the-ordinary. What’s extraordinary for us is ordinary for them, since they get paid to sit through hundreds of shows.
And sometimes they are just idiots. Because otherwise they would be *making* and producing shows instead of just being critics.
