Malaysian’s not interested in freedom of press?
May 4th, 2007 by Nick Tay
It seems these days, each time I open up the local newspaper, I am flabbergasted. What will they say next? Todays paper featured an article quoting Kota Melaka MB Wong Nai Chee ,”Malaysian will only be interested in press freedom issues when they become concern with rights-based issues instead of asking for more street lamps and better roads“.
I don’t even know where to start with this one. Lets try with the basics. Malaysians are forced to ask for things like street lamps and better roads because our allected officials don’t seem to have the pulse of the people. If they were more proactive, and did things like visit the locations where the people they represent live, find out about the issues they face daily, use the brains they have in their head, they would KNOW what the rakyat need. They would automaticly ask for funds to build roads, improve living conditions, reduce crime rates, things they ought to do. Its because they are so busy making a name for themselves and trying to figure out what they can do to be the next president of their Party that the rakyat has to complain about “trivial” things like lamp posts.
And by the way, there is nothing wrong with asking for Lampposts. Don’t they know that crimerates are super high as it is. All the Mat Rempit attacking people everywhere and cops nowhere to be found? Where are all the cops? Do we even have enough cops?
Are Malaysians interested about Freedom of press? Well, I say yes they are. How do I know this? Cos I am interested and I am Malaysian. I am not the only one thats interested either, they are so many bloggers out there who are. And why doesn’t the government know we are interested? Perhaps cos they choose to ignore it. After all, they don’t want freedom of press. They bring to court people like RockyBru. If we are not allowed to express the fact that we want freedom of press, how do you expect we will ever get it. And we have ministers in Parliment coming up with ideas like registering bloggers. Why? Because most people are turning to blogs to voice out thier opinions because they want freedom of press, and they can’t find it via newspapers.
“The Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission is now under serious consideration“, he says. Wow. Really? Woopiee!! Please! Thats all politicians talk. Under serious consideration doesn’t mean squat. I’ll believe it when the first high ranking officer sees some jail time, thats the only way to prove to the world its not just another puppet show.
