Monday Nights = SS2 Pasar Malam
April 16th, 2007 by Nick Tay
I must admit it. I am addicted to PM, or Pasar malam, (Night Market in English). This is how it works for you non-malaysians. The Local manciple council will allocate an area somewhere where the streets will be closed for traffic on a particular night, and vendors will come and open up stalls to sell anything and everything from food, snacks, pet goldfish, bra’s and panties, sport shoes, even software. Since Petaling Jaya (the area where I stay) is rather large, there is a Pasar malam is almost every night, in one given area. On Monday nights its in SS2, and its one of my favorite pasar malam’s because it has quite a variety of food and other stuff. I go for the food mostly, but every now and then, I do buy the odd item like a CD filled with MP3 songs or batteries and stuff like that.
What are some of my favourite Pasar malam foods?

1) The Popiah :- a Hokkien-style fresh spring roll common in Singapore and Malaysia. Popiah is often eaten in Fujian on Qingming Festival. A popiah “skin” is a thin pancake made from wheat flour which is covered with a sweet chili pepper sauce before it is filled. The filling is mainly finely grated jicama that has been cooked with a combination of other ingredients such as bean sprouts, French beans, lettuce leaves, grated carrots, dried prawns, Chinese sausage, seaweed and shredded omelette. As a fresh spring roll, the popiah skin itself is not fried. (Source)
2) Salted Bake Chicken :- A chinese style of baking the chicken where it is wrapped in a kind of paper and imersed in raw salt, and let to simmer.

3) Taiwanese Sausage :- A segment of Taiwanese pork sausage is wrapped in a (slightly bigger and fatter) sticky rice sausage to make this delicacy, usually served chargrilled. It may be compared to a hot dog. Deluxe versions are available in night markets in Taiwan, with condiments such as pickled bokchoi, garlic, and thick soy sauce paste to complement the taste. 4) Mango-loh :- Basicly its shaved ice with mangoo puree and pieces of mango fruit which makes an awesome Asian desert. Also comes in other fruit varaities like kiwi, strawberry, watermellon, honeydue.
Anyhoo, I am headed home now. Pictures tomorrow
