PC Fair 07 :- A review
April 13th, 2007 by Nick Tay

I had a meeting to attend, and didn’t have time for lunch, but I definately wasn’t gonna miss PC Fair, so I hopped into a Cab and uttered the words ,”KL Convention Center”. The Cab driver was a little upset I didn’t wanna go somewhere a little further, but he didn’t complain. Within minutes I was there, and I was all excited. The first room (Conference Hall 3) was kinda pointless. It was basically the most expensive of brands showing off thier wares, and of course girls scantly clad giving out fli. There were tons of guys taking pictures of the girls, most of which would gladly pose for you. Not having much time, I just walked pasted everything and headed to where the real deals where.
Next was the Banquet Room Level 3, which was filled with Audio stuff. I bought a pair of nice speakers there, RM49. There were many brands, from the unheard of to the famous Altech Lensing. Next room, Ballroom level 3. Also quite boring, mostly laptops and printers. Zoomed through.
Finally the real meat. Exhibition Halls 1 &2, Halls 4 & 5. Here is where you want to spend most of your time. These halls have everything from branded Laptops like the Lenova and Compaq to the lesser known brands like ASUS. There were also tonnes of printers and other various computer gadgets and misc items. You want printer catrdiges, here. You want CD and DVD’s? Here. USB Thumbdrives, MP3 Players, Bluetooth addapters, PDA’s, Camera’s, Mice, keyboards, RAM, everything is here for you to browse through.
My advice? Take your time, and double back. Don’t buy anything until you have shopped around, cos you can get very good deals. The competition is so high, and the items so numerous, that all the vendors want to do is sell, and sometimes they even sell items bellow cost.
Really one. I learned this from my years selling things at PC Fair. This is how it works. A booth cost money, especially to a shop that just wants 1 or 2 booths. Bigger companies like Canon or Epson get corporate rates to rent many many booths. They rent tons of booths, and and give an offer to vendors. Buy say 200 printers from us, and we give you a booth for free. Allot of vendors take this deal, and so there are many 10-20 vendors selling the same Canon Printer as a product. Say the printer cost them RM150 a peice, if they manage to sell all their printers at RM140, they loose say RM 10 X 200 = RM 2000. This lost is still much cheaper than the cost of renting the booth. Added with the profit they can make from selling high ticket items such as PC and Laptops, they don’t mind loosing a few bucks here and there on small ticket items, cos they are going for volume. What does this translate for you? Savings on small items, and good deals on higher price items, as the vendors are trying to sell buy bulk.
Mind you, the PC Fair business has changed allot over the years. Back when I was a seller, it was more like a night market. There were no hot chicks wearing next to nothing. Now days its more high end, but I think you can find a bargin if you shop around. Best to know the prices pre-PC Fair for high ticket items.
