The Cops Explain the recent raise in Crime….
April 11th, 2007 by Nick Tay
As you may or may not know, there has been a recent surge in the amount of reported crimes in Malaysia. It rose as much as 10.6% nationwide, as quoted by the Sun Newspaper. I was browsing through the same paper this morning, and I came across an article with the Headline “Cops give reasons for rising crime rate”, with the word reasons in red. They basicly were :-
- the higher cost of living as a result of rising fuel prices in the last two years forced some low-wage earners to turn to crime.
- the migration of people from the rural areas to the towns and cities forced them to face challanges of surviving. Some turned to snatch thives and unarmed robery.
- the rise in sexual crimes was because of moral deterioration of youths.
- the influx of foreign immigrations led to the higher incidence of serious crimes.
- More people came forward to report cases following the police assurance that every case will be investigated.
My initial response is, Hahahahahaha. Notice the first 4 reasons make it look like there is NOTHING, absolutely nothing the cops can do. And the last reason shows that its a good thing that there is a raise in crime! Wow!
A few questions to the boys in blue before I buy into the reasons :-
1) How did you come up with these reasons? Did you ask the people arrested for the crimes the reason they started their wicked ways? Did you do poll among criminals, and they specified fuel prices as the reason. How many crimes are commited by Foreigners in comparison with locals? Only youths are doing sex crimes? What about all those old men rapping children we always read about? To me it seems the cops just pulled out every reason they could think off and listed it, just like in the past where some moron blamed the tv show “CSI” for criminals being smarter.
2) Are our cops actually working? If you ask most Malaysians, they would say that the only cops that actually do any work in Malaysia are the Traffic Police and the outriders. We see the traffic cops every morning helping to make sure the traffic is smooth, and without them, I think most Malaysians would never get to work on time. I respect these boys, as rain or shine, they are at work each morning. And then there are the Outriders, who make sure VIPs get to wherever they are going on time. They work hard, I am sure.
But what about the rest of the cops? How come we hardly ever see Cops patrolling streets which have high cases of Snatch thives? Did you know I personally know 5 people who have had their purses snatched in SS2, right in front of the police station!!!
Or when my car was broken into and my laptop stolen. When I went to the police station, they just said ,” Oh, this area allot of thieves. You should have been more careful”. Hello? If you know there are allot of thieves, how come you don’t do more patrols??
I want to know what the cops do all day! The cops should give a public account of how many officers they have, and what these guys do all day. Show us their timesheets. I don’t need to know exactly where they are when, but I want some proof that they are hard at work, and not hardly working. If the statistics show they are really overworked, then cabinet should approve higher funding for them, hire more cops. Keep our streets safe. That way more tourist will come!! Right??
3) What are the steps you are going to take to reduce the crime level?
Do we have a plan? Are we just gonna live with the “facts” that crime is up and there is nothing we can do about it? I want a plan of action. In any business if sales are down, the managers think of ways to improve sales. The same should be with Cops. If crime is up, what steps are we gonna take to bring it down.
4) Every crime will be investigated?
Really? No cops got back to me about my car being broken into. No cops got back to my friend when she had her purse snatched right in front of her house! Nobody got back to my other friend when her house was robbed. Where is the follow up? Where is the investigation? Explain HOW every crime will be investigated? Please…
Malaysians have lost faith in the cops. They are only good for 2 things now , 1 keeping the traffic smooth and 2 taking bribes…..sigh….Malaysia Boleh…
