The Foreign Ministry has not yet decided whether to send its Consulate Department deputy head to attend the next court appearance of several people accused of the murder of Mongolian woman Altantuya on October 19 in Malaysia.
Responding to a public apeal by a number of NGOs, the ministry stressed that Mongolia’s Honorary Consul was working very hard on the case.
Two Mongolian reporters are in Kuala Lumpur, assisted financially by the Mongolian Democtratic Union’s Democratic Fund and with visa help from the Foreign Ministry.
The consulate department announced that the laywer representing one of the accused, political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, has been replaced, and the case had therefore been adjourned to early January.
Foreign Minister N.Enkhbold said the ministry had not yet decided whether to send a representative in January, as it was expected that the trail could be a lengthy one.
Odriin Sonin reporter B. Ganchimeg wrote from Kuala Lumpur, “On December 14, policemen Sirul Azhar (35) and Azila Hadri (30) pleaded not guilty. Application was made to continue the hearing next week, but this was said to be not possible because of the unavailability of the Judge.”
“It is beleive that the trail could be delayed until next October or November. One defence When Abdul Razak Baginda’s Lawyer applied for an extention of bail, the prosecution objected, aruguing that bail should not be given to somebody accused of murder.”
“Bail was allowed, with an added condition that Baginda must give up his passport and must report at the police station once a week. Baginda refused to explain why he changed lawyers.”
“Lawyers said that the January 5 hearing may simply be another application for continuance and the case may not begin in earnest until end of next year.”
Mongolian lawyer B. Bayar was in court to represent the family of the deceased, Sh. Altantuya.B. Ooluun
