The trip home….

November 10th, 2006 by Nick Tay

What a long trip…..I got to the airport on Tuesday 7th, and I reached home 12:40am on Friday 10th. On Tuesday, my plane was suppose to leave at 12pm and arrive at 2pm and then there was a bad winter storm between Beijing and Ulaanbaatar, the storm was soo bad that the plane from Beijing actually took off and then flew back to Beijing cos the winds were so severe. We sat in the terminal till 3pm, and then were told that the flight would be delayed till 9pm. We were all ferried to a hotel, where we were paired with total strangers. I got this nice man named Hemata Mishra who was a Nepalese, working with the American Himalaayan Foundation. We chatted alittle in the room, and watched with much happiness the results of the US mid term allection. Haha..Padan Muka Bush!! We were fed at 6pm, and then ferried back to the Airport at 8pm. The flight finally took off at 10:30, and I arrived in Beijing Airport at 12:30am.

I have been to many an airport and I must say, the worst airport I have ever been to is Beijing’s Capitol Airport! I have NEVER left that airport without something crappy happening, mostly due to the staff or the lack of facilities in that horrid place. At 12:30, there is nothing open!! No money changers!! This is an international airport and there are NO money changers!! Without money changers, how are you suppose to get a hotel or pay for a cab? The Hotel counter there DOES NOT take International Credit Cards after mid-night, cos they have already done thier selletment!!

And then they are all the Touts roaming the airport, “trying” to help you. My goodness!! Where are all the cops!! If you change money with them, they give you terrible rates, and you cannot change the remaining unused money back to USD, cos in China, you need your passport and the original receipt from your money changing to change back any unused currency. What did I do? I slept on a chair, which is design in a way where you cannot sleep lying down! Then I had to use the toilet, and wouldn’t you know it, it stinks and there are FLIES everywhere!! In an International Airport!!! My goodness!! Olympics how??

Finally when the money changers decided to open at 7:30am, I changed my USD and manage to get a time-cost room, paying RM 160 for 8 hours of sleep. At 2:00pm, checked in, stayed in the Dinners club business lounge, boared the plane, and headed home….

On this day in History..
