Two Tents on Shukbatar Square…
November 1st, 2006 by Nick Tay
For the longest time, there have been these two tents on the square facing the parliment building. Its occupied by family members of a woman who has recently been arrested for something. Her family is protesting the arrest saying it is unlawful, and they are there everyday. They have photos set up, and they just sit there in the cold -7 nights. Thats actually quite mild for this time of the year, and with tempretures sure to drop way bellow -40 in the weeks and months to come, I wonder how long will that tent remain there. The guys from China are amazed that the family is still there. They have never seen a protest of this sort, then again, we all know what happens to people who protest in China!! Rememeber Tiananmen Square?? I told them that in most countries in the Free world, you CAN protest, you just need to apply for a permit from the police, to which thier reply was “Why would the police allow that?”. I guess that concept is lost on them. A few days ago, the protest was huge, the main roads were closed and there was even a Ger constructed right in the middle of a major junction opposite the Post Office, but everything was peaceful. Thats good. I honestly wonder if those tents will still be there in the weeks to come. Talk about persistance
