Alone, Listless, Breakfast Table in an otherwise empty room….

…Well, I am not so young anymore and I am not a girl, so I guess need to change song right? For those of you who don’t get it, the title was the opening lyrics of Pearl Jam’s - Daughter. Anyhoo, yes, the loneliness is begining to get to me. It does every trip, sooner or later, as there is only so much time a person can spend alone before it gets to him. I can do it, I have done it many a time, spent weeks, even months without talking to anybody else. When I mean talk, I don’t mean ordering your food at a restaurant, though in Mongolia, I usually point at the menu anyways. Most days I say less than 30 words the entire day, not counting my prayers and the internal mind conversations I have with myself and my other personalities deep within my very being. How do I survive? For one thing, I have about 2GB of music on my MP3 player, which blasts at my ear almost all day, and I love to sing to myself. That does help. In fact I recomend anybody who has to travel allot, on long flights or even just long bus rides to invest in an MP3 player. They really help pass the time. Of course there are my books, though for me, I need to be in the mood to read. I can’t just read all the time. And then there are my DVD’s. I still have 2 DVD’s that I have not seen yet in my bag. “Superman Returns” and “Thank You for Smoking”. I am saving them for a really-really bad day where there is absolutely nothing on Cable, and I am sure that day will come sooner or later. You have to pace yourself, less you run out of entertaintment.
People keep telling me, why don’t you go out and walk. Go outside and do something? This just shows such little knowladge of Mongolia they have. Even the locals don’t go out walking because 1) Its Cold out there 2) It gets dark very early during winter 3) You get harrased by street kids who will hit you or kick you until you give them money 4) The streets are not exactly safe lah. I have been mugged once, attacked once and been kicked and had stoned threw at me by a gang of street kids for refusing to give them money. That’s not even counting the number of drunk people on the streets. I would be safer if I looked Mongolian, then nobody would really trouble me, but with my so obvious non-Mongolian looks, I get most of the harrasment. Then again, I rather look Indian than look chinese in Mongolia
Another few more months then I am home, I’ll be home for Christmas, where I will go for a holiday, by myself. The Life of a single man….
