International Children’s Day

It’s a public holiday! International Children’s Day, and here in Mongolia its celebrated with a BANG! Its such a big deal that the sale of Alcohol , which is a huge thing here, is banned for the day. The square was filled with many stanges and events, and there was more people that I have ever seen in Mongolia in that square. Me and the boys arrived there about 10:30am, and I quickly started snapping away. I almost took 400 pictures, but ran out of batteries by lunch time. There were dances, musical bands, fashion shows, camel and horse rides, games, clowns, the works. The President of the country came as well.

Mongolia is a generally safe country, but it seems I am a magnet for crime. I have been mugged once, assalted once and today I was followed. Seriously! The boys and I seperated because I wanted to take pictures and they just wanted to look around. I walked and walked and took tons of photos and nothing really happend. The square was filled with cops and of course I felt very safe. I was snapping away at the main stage then I noticed a guy I have seen before. I thought nothing of him, and walked to another place, turned around, and he was there again. I was suppose to meet up with the guys infront of the bank at 12:30 for lunch, and thus headed that direction, turned around, and I saw him walking there too. As I was about to cross the road, I walked half way , stopped and turned back, and he too walked half way and stopped in the middle of a closed road. Then I stared at him, and he made eye contact with me, gave me a mean look and motioned something that was not pleasant with his hands. He was upset I realized I was being followed, and probably robbed if he followed me to a less crowded place. I just stood there and he stared at me. I crossed the road towards the square, went to a cop, and tried to tell him what was going on, but the Cop didn’t speak English and was more concern on the safety of the President and crowd control. I kept pointing at the man following me to the cop, and the bad man realized I was not affraid of him soon dissapeared. I waited in front of the Bank, in plain view of the cops for my 2 team members to arrive, not wanting to give him an opertunity to catch me alone. And left the square for lunch without furthur incident. The sad thing is these things always happen to me, because of my skin colour. They can soo tell that I am not a Mongolian, and God only knows why the white tourist are not hassled.

We had lunch, visited Zaisan, and then it was back home for the rest of the day resting.
