My Apartment in UB
February 13th, 2006 by Nick Tay

Yes, I have arrived. The rest of the flight was pretty normal. I slept and when I woke up, we were about to land. It was freezing when I arrived, quickly collected my luggage, zipped it open and wore my Winter Jacket. After a few hours of Climatization though, I was pretty warm. Didn’t even wear my thermal undies which back in December I depended on to keep me warm. I was shown to my new 1 bedroom apartment. The place I will call home for the next 1 month. Check it out.

[...] I live in an apartment in the center of UlaanBator, or UB, as its affectionately known here. Its the same place I stayed in back in February when I was here for 3 weeks, and its a nice place, but I don’t know any of my neighboors. During the last few weeks I have been staying here, I have had all sorts of experinces, not all of them pleasent such as the Security Guard refusing to let me in when I came back late, because he didn’t know I stayed here, and having the front door to the apartment locked and the key not work. There was even once I was scared almost to point I would have peed in my pants. I entered the dark stairway at about 1am with one of my co-workers Kuan, and we say an old woman, just standing there, in the darkness, looking at us. I thought it was in my head till Kuan asked me, “What she doing there in the dark”. She just saw us, and walked upstairs, in total darkness. [...]
