And there we were (notice how I like to start my blog entries like this), 5 Malaysian Manly men at our favorite Chinese place for dinner. We sat down, ordered our food and like most of our countrymen we chatted away. Being Malaysian, and being Chinese ethnically, we spoke in Mandarin, Cantonese, some Hokien, English and of course Malay. This is extremely helpful when we want to talk about how pretty the girl is in the next table or complain about the table of Chinamen who talk exceedingly loud and smoke like nobodies business. Our conversation went on and on and then two kwailo’s (a man and a pregnant lady) came in. They sat at the table beside us and ordered their food. We didn’t pay much attention to them, and went on with our meal and conversation. The time came to leave and I asked the boss for the bill. It was 19100 and I told the guys the price in Malay. At this the man looked straight at me and asked “Where are you guys from? You speak so many languages.” I told them we are Malaysian and we speak many languages”. The guy was from Holland and spoke Mandarin, the lady was from Germany and spoke excellent Cantonese. They were listing to our conversation with much amazement and it was Malay that made them extremely curious. Thank goodness we didn’t say anything about them.
