If Daddy or Joey doesn’t come, would you give me away….
July 11th, 2005 by Nick Tay
It was a conversation, that, well, I knew was coming, but wasn’t truly prepared for. You see, we are not really close to our dad, and well, our oldest brother, who has moved to Ireland doesn’t really keep in touch with us. I may not be close to my sister, but I do truly love her. So, I gladly accepted that duty with pride. I am hoping my dad will come, just so that he can see his first daughter get married.
We talked more about other things, such as living arrangements once she ties the knot. I told her I would move out, and find a place to stay, probably an apartment by myself. She admitted that she wanted me to move out, but didn’t know how to say it. I am smart enough to know that with marriage comes allot of adjustments and obviously, having your brother in the same house.
“Will you come visit”, she asked, and “Once in a while, once in a long while”. She knows I am a loner, and the thought of spending time with married couples doesn’t really excite me. “If I have kids will you come?”, she then asked. “Are you kidding? I love kids, I will come all the time to be their favorite Uncle Nick”. I then suggested names for her kids, giving her names that I wanted to name my kids. I may as well let her have those names, as I might not get married. She goes “If you don’t get married, you better get insurance!”
We had one of the most honest conversations we ever had. My sister, opened up a news paper and started looking for apartments for me, giving me suggestions on where to live. There is no doubt she worries about me. Hoping and praying I find somebody to marry. I think growing up in the environment, expressing our sibling love to each other has never been easy. I will be the first to admit I am closer to other girls I know than I am with my sister. In fact, that’s one of the reasons I love youth ministry. I get to be an older brother to many people, something I never really got to be to my own sister.
In 15 months, life is going to be very different.
