I See
March 28th, 2005 by Nick Tay
Three men have lunch together at the 12th Floor Foodcourt at AmBank Raja Chulan. All of them Indian, around 35-40 years old in age. Two of them eat out of plastic lunchboxes, most probably brought from home, prepared by thier wives. The third man orders some chapati from one of the many stores here. He looks with envy at the briani rice one of the other two men has, and asks for a taste. His friend obliges, and dumpes two spoonfulls of the good stuff on his plate. They continue happily, as they chat the afternoon away in Tamil.
To my right a woman sits alone at a table. Dressed in a white top with black pin stripes, and a knee lenght skirt, she enjoys what appears to be fishball noodle soup, slurping away joyfully. A mobile phone rings, and she opens her handbag, taking out a pink handphone case, which holds a small Samsong flip phone. There is a smile on her face as she reconizes the callers number, and in a mellow voice she says “Hello”.
Not wanting to easedrop, I look for another subject to watch. The foodcourt is filled with people, mostly AmBank staff, reconizable by either thier awkard red tie, or the red lanyard they wear around thier necks.
I am a people watcher! I love to see life in action, in the eyes of two lovers as they meet, in the faces of good friends as they share a simple meal, in the sway of little children as they walk with thier parents proudly, without a care in the world. I wish my eyes could take pictures, so that I could show the world the beauty in the people around us. There is beauty in everything I see. Everything. Even in the moments of sorrow and despair, there is beauty in the love and compassion we feel for one and other.
And I think to myself, What a wonderful world
