The Lone Rider
October 31st, 2003 by Nick Tay
I woke up this morning, watched some TV, checked my email, got ready and off I was to work. I got into my favorite Cab, which sometimes I manage to catch if he does not pick up other passengers yet. Yes I have a favorite cab. Thats sounds sad I know, but when 3 months you have been in Hanoi, you do pick have to pick up a favourite something or other. Why is he the cabbie of my choice? He is polite, he speaks English, and he keeps the Radio tunned to a station that plays okay music and some news. So yeah. He is my man of choice. Ever notice cabbies are always men? Even in Malaysia?
Anyways, We continued our journey, and then I saw the traditional way of vietnamese tranportation. Sometimes, I wonder how these guys do what they do? It must take some serious determination, pride and physicall strength to cary tourist all day on these trishaws. And most of these guys are not young. Most of them in thier fourties and fifties, probably taking this job because its contant work. There are always tourist in a country. I don’t know about you, but I can’t bring myself to ride one of these. I just have a problem with letting a man in his fourties use all this strength to ferry my butt around town, but thats just me.
Just some random thought.
