Shattered Glass

October 25th, 2003 by Nick Tay

With a title like that you must imagine something really dramatic happend to the Reflector today. Well, its a long story…actually no, It was a quite short one. I was reaching to the coffee table to get my laptop, and I accidently nudged the glass ashtray on the floor. One crashing sound later, I found myself at the reception desk being charged VND 150,000 for damage. Almost instantly they gave me a 50% discount for my loyalty to the Summerset West Lake Hanoi. You gotta love them, 50% off damage of private property. Now I can go on that rampage I always wanted to :)

Its a Sunday, and as usuall I am at work. Todays journey proved to be quite dramatic with a fair amount of accidents and incidents, thankfully not involving me or the cab I was in. We started our journey, and I noticed two young ladies on a motorbike. Then there was a great big sudden gust of wind, and one of the girls baseball cap’s flew off. She then did an emergency stop, nearly causing a 15 bike pile up, and rushed to get her cap from the centre of a busy road where it had landed.

We then continued our journey, and I saw a military jeep with sirens blasting, rushing through a red traffic light. It narrowly missed 12 different motorbikes. Boy the vietnamese are crazy drivers! A few seconds later, at the same traffic light, when it was our turn to go, a motorcycle which was carrying a keg of beer, had suddently lost his cargo. The keg rolled on to the road, narrowly causing 3 major road accident.

We carried on with our journey, and as we were turning into our final destination, the bank, one motorcycle rider was not paying attention to where he was going, and within seconds of impact with our cab, his eyes saw the obsruction before him, and he did an emergency stop. Its really amazing what you see when you watch life go by through the window of a taxi.
