Splish Splash, Puppets Taking a Bath
October 10th, 2003 by Nick Tay

In what Proves to be the Most Cultural Day I have had in Vietnam Yet, The Thang Long Water Puppet Theather is one of the “Must See” Events in Hanoi. Imagine a Theather which has a stage about the Size of the GTYC Stage. On the Imediate Right, there is an elavated platform which hold about 15 musicians and singers playing many traditional instruments such as a One String Thinngy, a Chinese Harpsichord, A Gutiar like instrument, and an array of unique asian rthythm instruments. In centerstage there is the picture bellow, with a 3 feet deep Baptism Pool. All the puppets appear from either behind that curtian or from underwater. This show lasts 1 hour which is devided into 17 diffrent short stories. My faveriot one was this play called “Pheonix Love Dance”, or as I like to call it “Fire Birds Getting Jiggy With it”. It starts with the Male Pheniox swimming in the pool, shouting out his love song, and then a female appears. They do a dance of love, chasing each other, dancing circles, and then the come together necks intertwined, and as they went apart, an egg apears floating in the water, they swim around the egg, they come together they hug, and then a baby pheonix appeared.
Other cool ones were “Boys Playing in a river” Where these four boys did like a scyncronized Swimming act, “Boat Racing” and “Unicorns Play with Ball”.
