The Cabbie Story

October 6th, 2003 by Nick Tay

Saturday Night. Well, lets see. The day went pretty well, all things considered, so at 1830 GMT +700. I walked out of the bank, and as I was going to cross the road to the taxi on the other side (Why did Nick cross the road, to get to the taxi) A taxi flashes his highlights to me, and asked me “tAXI?”. I think that was the only english word he knew. SO, I hopped in, flashed him the Hotel Card and said with the Upmost confidence “Thuy Kay”..Which the name of the street where I lived. SO he glanced at the card, repeated “Thuy Kay, Thuy Kay”. And we were off. Now, most of the ride was pretty quite, a few near misses accident wise. Like every other Taxi driver, he will honk and honk, wave in and out of traffic. At, then just when we were on the home strech, A cop was in the middle of the road. He pointed his batton to my cabbie, and signalled him to stop and park at the side of the road. At this point i was like “What?”. The policeman took his own sweet time to reach the cabbie, he then said some words, which I assume was “Licence and registration please! “. (Been watching too much COPS on TV). SO the cabbie gave the documents demanded, and then and arguement started. The cop said something which again assume was “Please step out of the car”. This is because he turned off the engine and got out of the car. The cop and cabbie, walked off somewhere and there I was . Sitting in a cab, about 2 KM away from the Hotel. I was thinking, should i just walk back? SHould I sit and wait. In what seemed like an eternity, which actually turned out to be 5 minutes later, the cabbie returned, started the engine and we continued the journey. Now the cabbie was mad. He kept talking to me in Vietnamese, trying to tell me what happend. Yet again I am assuming here, but through my Great powers of Observasion I assume he was telliing me the following

1) The Cop stopped him because he didn’t stop at the conner and look both ways before crossing.

2)He had bribed the COP VND 20,000 (RM 4.98, USD 1.31 ). This may not seem like much to you and me, but the Fare from the Bank to the Hotel was only VND 25,000.

3) This was not the first time this has happend to him, the cops do this every week.

4) Nick, You are the man. You the MAN! (Either that or Nick, You are tanned, You Tanned!!).

Anyhoo, thats was what happend.

On this day in History..
